NEW DELHI: The Indian Cricket Board (BCCI) has agreed to field both men’s and women’s teams for the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028. BCCI has also agreed to field its women’s team or the Birmingham Commonwealth Games next year.
BCCI’s willingness to participate in the Olympics could be a huge boost for the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) plans to get a place in the Olympics. Cricket was last part of the Olympics in 1900.
“The board is agreeable to send both its teams if cricket makes it the cut for the LA Olympics. It will be a boost for both men’s and women’s cricket,” a senior BCCI official told TOI after an apex council meeting on Friday.
The ICC has recently formed a committee to look into the feasibility of cricket making it back into the Olympics. The committee is in charge of dealing with the International Olympic Committee (IOC). BCCI’s reluctance to come under its national anti-doping agency (Nada) was seen as a major hurdle for ICC in its bid to expand the sport through Olympics. With BCCI coming under the umbrella of Nada and also backing ICC’s bid to get into the Olympics fold is a major boost for ICC.
“If BCCI will retain its autonomous status or be deemed as a national sports federation can be handled later. At this moment, it’s important that BCCI plays its part in expanding the sport,” the official said.
“The board is now putting more emphasis in growing the women’s game. More exposure to bigger events help the game grow in the country. Birmingham CWG is just the first step,” the official added.
Women’s team to tour Oz, NZ before World Cup
The board also decided that the women’s national team will be playing at least three international series leading to the World Cup in New Zealand early next year. The women’s team will play two series at home against either West Indies or South Africa in September before the team flies out to Australia for a series. The team will then go to New Zealand for an ODI series as a preparation for the World Cup. TOI has learnt that the team will play more ODIs in these series as a preparation.
Meanwhile, the women’s T20 Challenge will remain a three-team affair during the IPL this year. However, there will be a proper national camp before the tournament as the women’s team is due to fly out to England after the IPL for a one-off Test and three T20Is and ODIs each.
