IPL 2021: Kane Williamson to lead SRH, David Warner may lose spot in XI | Cricket News

HYDERABAD: Kane Richardson has replaced David Warner as the captain of Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) for the rest of this Indian Premier League (IPL) season. The move comes in the wake of Sunrisers’ poor show so far, where they have suffered five defeats in six matches and lie at the bottom of the table.

“Sunrisers Hyderabad would like to announce that Kane Williamson will be taking over the captaincy for Sunday’s match and for the remainder of IPL 2021,” SRH said on Saturday.
New Zealand captain Williamson, who missed the first three matches due to an elbow injury, made immediate impact on return to the XI with scores of 16, 66 and 26 without being dismissed.

Right through the tournament, Warner has been far from his attacking best, with scores of 3, 54, 36, 37, 6 and 57. His form with the bat seemed to have rubbed off on his captaincy.
The Australian questioned the decision to leave out Manish Pandey and play Virat Singh against Delhi Capitals and called it a “harsh” decision, something which didn’t go well with the team management. Warner, however, took full responsibility for the defeat against CSK, where he scored a slow 57.
He is likely to lose his place in the playing XI in the match against Rajasthan Royals.
“This decision has not come lightly as the management respects the enormous impact David Warner has had for the franchise over a number of years.
The team management has also made the decision that they will be changing their overseas combination for Sunday’s match against Rajasthan Royals,” the statement added.

Jason Holder is likely to replace Warner as Sunrisers desperately look to revive their fortunes.
After a tumultuous 2014 when captaincy changed hands from Kumar Sangakkara to Shikhar Dhawan and Darren Sammy, Warner took over the reins in 2015 and Sunrisers won the title in 2016. Warner was the Orange cap holder in 2016 and 2017.
In Warner’s absence due to ‘sandpapergate’, Williamson led the team in 2018 and Sunrisers finished runners-up. They finished fourth last season.
