According to a new report on The Hollywood Reporter, ‘Joker 2‘ is still on the cards. Although the report focused mainly on an African-American taking on the role of Superman in an upcoming movie, there is a mention of “
Joker and its planned sequel.”
This has given fans of the superhit Todd Phillips directorial hope that the studio is still pushing for the sequel.
Directed and produced by Phillips, ‘Joker’ became a hit around the world for its alternate origins story for Batman’s most notorious rival, the Clown Prince of Crime. The film grossed over a billion dollars at the box office and won numerous accolades, including an Academy Award for Phoenix and Best Picture and Best Director nominations for Phillips.
Reports previously suggested that Phillips started working on a sequel that will further explore the story of the iconic DC villain. When quizzed about the same, the filmmaker said that he is game to further explore the character if an ideal opportunity came his way.
Phillips said at an event he is “open” to reunite with Phoenix but nothing is final as of yet.
Even if the project is a sequel to “Joker”, Phillips said he will only direct if he believes the new film will be able to resonate with the audiences like the original.
“It would have to have a real thematic resonance the way this one did, ultimately being about childhood trauma and the lack of love, and the loss of empathy. All those things are really what made this movie work for us, so we’d have to have something that had an equal thematic resonance,” he said.
