Navjot Singh Sidhu meets Sonia Gandhi amid infighting in Punjab Congress | India News

NEW DELHI: Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu on Friday met interim party president Sonia Gandhi at her 10 Janpath residence in New Delhi.
Congress Punjab incharge Harish Rawat too arrived at Sonia’s residence for the meeting.
The grand old party has been trying to work out an arrangement between Punjab CM Amarinder and Sidhu ahead of the assembly elections in the state next year.
Harish Rawat on Thursday said that Sidhu could be made the party president and a peace formula to ensure that the cricketer-turned-politician and chief minister Captain Amarinder Singh were on the same page had been worked out.
Rawat’s announcement came as a surprise for the Amarinder camp, who apparently is not happy with the likely elevation of “newcomer” Sidhu.
A war of wits played out in public, with separate meetings of the CM with loyalists, while Sidhu called on dissident ministers.
There has been talk of Sidhu becoming the president with two working presidents while Amarinder will remain the face of the party in 2022 polls.
Amid the heightened tension in the party due to his comments, Rawat, following a meeting with Congress president Sonia Gandhi in the evening, mildly retraced his steps. “I didn’t say that Sidhu was becoming president. I was asked if he was, and I had said that a decision was being taken around what you are saying,” he told reporters.
Amarinder and Sidhu have been at each other’s throats ever since the former cricketer left BJP and joined Congress in 2017. Their spat has in recent months become public and threatens to derail the party ahead of the state elections next year.
