Punjab Congress crisis: Navjot Sidhu reaches out to ministers, MLAs; Harish Rawat meets Amarinder | Chandigarh News

CHANDIGARH: Even as a formal announcement about his possible elevation as Punjab Congress chief is still awaited, cricketer-turned-politician Navjot Singh Sidhu on Saturday drove to Chandigarh from his Patiala residence to meet with a cross section of cabinet ministers and MLAs, including those considered to be loyalists of chief minister Amarinder Singh.
On the other hand, AICC in-charge of Punjab affairs Harish Rawat came by chopper to meet with Amarinder amid reports that the latter had expressed his apprehensions about Sidhu’s appointment as the state chief, pointing out that it would harm the party in the next assembly polls.

“Had a fruitful meeting with Harish Rawat. Reiterated that any decision of INC president will be acceptable to all. Raised certain issues which he said he’ll take up with INC president,” tweeted Raveen Thukral, media adviser to the chief minister.

Rawat’s visit came a day after Amarinder shot off a letter to party president Sonia Gandhi in a bid to stall Sidhu’s elevation.
Sidhu started his series of meetings with the present PPCC president Sunil Jakhar at the latter’s residence in Panchkula and then met with cabinet ministers Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, Balbir Sidhu, besides MLAs including Amarinder Singh Raja Warring in Chandigarh. He also reached out to Mandi Board chairman Lal Singh. Both Sidhu and Lal Singh are considered to be loyalists of Amarinder.
Meanwhile, preparations have been on in Amritsar for Sidhu’s grand welcome after a formal announcement is made by the party high command.
