Rahul Gandhi meets Amarinder’s adviser Prashant Kishor amid Punjab Congress crisis | India News

NEW DELHI: Poll strategist Prashant Kishor on Tuesday met former Congress president Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka, in a move that could be significant for the party in Punjab which goes to polls early next year.
Prashant Kishor’s meeting with the Congress leadership comes days after he had met Punjab chief minister Amarinder Singh, who is locked in a bitter political battle with cricketer-turned-politician Navjot Singh Sidhu.
Amarinder, who is gearing up to retain power for a second term, has appointed Prashant Kishor as his principal adviser.
Sidhu has been vocal about his differences with the Punjab chief minister and is not ready for any compromise that does not ensure significant gains for him. He had quit the Punjab ministry in 2019 after his portfolio was changed by the chief minister.
Both the leaders have openly traded barbs at each other, much to the embarrassment of the Congress leadership.
Sidhu had recently met both Rahul and Priyanka, who are trying to broker truce between the warring Punjab factions.
Amarinder, on the other hand, had met interim Congress president Sonia Gandhi in a bid to resolve the crisis. After the meeting, Amarinder said he will abide by whatever Sonia decides, but refused to comment on his differences with Sidhu.
With assembly elections in the state due early next year, the Congress is trying its best to end infighting in the state unit.
Prashant Kishor has been meeting with several opposition leaders in the last few months. His several meetings with Nationalist Congress Party chief Sharad Pawar recently fuelled speculations about a possible political realignment of opposition parties. However, Prashant Kishor has maintained that any opposition coalition should have the Congress as a part of it.
Sidhu adds to the twist with tweet praising AAP
Amid efforts by the Congress to solve the infighting in Punjab, Navjot Singh Sidhu left everyone guessing with a tweet in which he said that the opposition Aam Aadmi Party has always recognised his vision and work for Punjab.
His remarks came a day after AAP Punjab unit chief Bhagwant Mann took a dig at the cricketer-turned-politician and asked him to tweet about the “funds” allegedly accepted by the ruling Congress from private power companies in the state.
“Our opposition AAP has always recognised my vision & work for Punjab. Be it Before 2017- Beadbi, Drugs, Farmers Issues, Corruption & Power Crisis faced by People of Punjab raised by me or today as I present ‘Punjab Model’, it is clear they know – who is really fighting for Punjab,” Sidhu said in a series of tweets.
Sidhu also shared old videos of AAP leaders praising him for raising his voice on several issues including the drug mafia and corruption during the previous SAD-BJP regime.
