MUMBAI: Former Mumbai wicketkeeper Sulakshan Kulkarni has applied to be the coach of the India women’s team. The last date to apply for the post was April 26.
Mumbai had won the Ranji Trophy with Kulkarni as the coach in the 2012-13 season, besides reaching the semifinals in 2011-12 and the quarters in the 2013-14 season during his three-year stint. He has coached Vidarbha and Chhatisgarh too.
The 54-year-old was the coach of India’s specially-abled cricket team that won the inaugural T20 Physical Disability World Cricket Series in 2019.
Kulkarni will have to compete with former India opener WV Raman, who has re-applied for the job, while former chief of the selection committee Hemlata Kala, Mamatha Maben, Suman Sharma, Nooshin Al Khadeer and Jaya Sharma have also thrown their hat in the ring.
On April 14, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had invited applications for the head coach’s role after Raman’s contract expired last October. The former India cricketer, however, was asked to continue till the recently concluded home series against South Africa.
“Having coached so many teams successfully, I’m confident that I will take the Indian women’s cricket team forward,” Kulkarni, who has just recovered from severe Covid infection that forced him to be hospitalised, said.
In the advertisement, the BCCI had stated that the head coach will have to work with the women’s national team, Women’s India A and Women’s India U-19 teams. The India women’s team is supposed to travel to England in June for one-off Test and three T20Is and ODIs.
The head coach will be picked by the BCCI’s Cricket Advisory Committee, which is headed by Madan Lal and includes two other members in RP Singh and Sulakshana Naik. The interview process is expected to be held online soon.
