How did you bring up Shahid?
I was working then and he used to travel with me a lot. He used to sit on the edge of the stage and watch me perform. Like a sponge, he absorbed a lot from my work. Later, I shifted to Mumbai and started getting more acting offers. He stayed with his grandparents, uncles, and aunties, but soon came down to Mumbai to stay with me. It wasn’t easy for him to adjust as there he had his uncles, aunts, and cousins all around him. But I am glad about the way that life has shaped up for him. Look at where he is today!
How was Shahid academically?
When he applied himself, he was very good. He was excellent at arts and took part in a lot of plays.
Which are your top three films of Shahid?
‘Haider’, ‘Kaminey’, and ‘Kabir Singh’–in that order.
Do you think he shouldn’t have done some of the films which he has in his filmography?
There are plenty that he could have avoided. He didn’t have a backing of any sort. Yet he survived and flourished. ‘Jab We Met’ and ‘Udta Punjab‘ made a good, strong difference to his career.
Take us back to the time when Shahid came and told you that he was in love with Mira Rajput…
He was very shy but he somehow told me. I met Mira immediately and found her to be a girl who was not just pretty and glamorous, but someone who was very balanced and loving. I liked her instantly. I am friends with Mira’s mom too.
How would you describe your relationship with Mira?
She is just like my daughter. We are buddies, actually.
What change has she brought in Shahid’s life?
Shahid has become very relaxed after marriage, he is looked well-looked after, he is happier.
Was he edgy before?
Not edgy, but let’s say he was younger. And, you know what difference a happy family does to a man; he longs to get back home and be with his wife and kids.
What advice would you give him if and when his films didn’t do well?
I have a clear understanding of parenting. If my children are good at their work and have a clear vision, I should be there for their support and not poke at them. They will come to know if and when they need me for guidance. But I should not meddle of my own will.
How’s your equation with Misha and Zain?
I forget everything else when I am with them. We set up our own world. Ishaan is a deewana (very fond) of his nephew and niece.
Does he stay over at Shahid’s place sometimes?
How different are Shahid and Ishaan from each other?
Not much. But yes, Shahid is an introvert and Ishaan is an extrovert. In Ishaan’s company, Shahid becomes flamboyant. Shahid loves cricket, while Ishaan likes football, bouldering, and trekking. Shahid was a prankster at school and became quiet only after he became an instructor at Shiamak Davar’s classes. There are times when they sit and discuss books, games, and cinema and it’s fun listening to them. But there are similarities too between Ishaan and Shahid.
Both are very good mimics.
Today, I am a proud mother of two boys. If I hadn’t put in efforts, would they have been full of such sparkle and confidence? Every bit was worth it. I am blessed. I am grateful to God.
